What to expect during a treatment

One of the priorities for my clients is that they feel at ease the moment that they arrive for their reflexology appointment. Taking away the stress response and inducing deep relaxation is key in reflexology. Let’s take a look at what to expect from the moment you arrive at Inner Calm Reflexology so you feel comfortable at your appointment.

When you arrive, you will have a seat to remove your socks and shoes in the foyer (I can assist with this if required). No other clothing is required to be removed. We then move into the treatment room with calming music, where you will be comfortably seated while your feet soak in a warm foot bath of Epsom salts and essential oils, to detoxify and soothe.

A full consultation of your medical history, health and lifestyle, and what you would like to focus on in your treatment will be discussed. From this information your treatment can be tailored specifically to you, to gain the most out of reflexology. This usually takes between 15 to 20 minutes. All information is treated as confidential and you can share as much or as little as you like.

You will then move to the massage table and lie on your back supported by pillows behind your lower legs and head. The table can be lifted at the head end so you are in a more upright position if you require more support. Different layers of blankets are used so you feel warm (your temperature can drop during a treatment).

I use a balm with essential oils to work on your feet or rosehip oil for facial reflexology. If you have any allergies we check this before we start.

For foot reflexology we begin with gentle relaxing techniques to introduce the touch to your feet. Warm towels cover the other foot. You can then let me know what amount of pressure feels best as I work. The pressure is firm and does not feel ticklish. Reflexology involves in a mixture of press and release techniques to calm or stimulate the reflexes and it should never be painful. You can let me know if there are areas of tenderness – a sign that this is an area that requires work and if too much I can use a different technique. Some of the most powerful work is holding a particular acupressure or reflexology point.

I will let you relax and drift off if you like. If you have any questions or would like to share anything, go ahead (I let you lead on this), otherwise conversation is left till the end. Each individual’s response to reflexology is unique, but a few experiences can involve tingles or twitching, warmth in a particular area, feelings of relaxation, contraction of muscles or emotional release.

At the end of your treatment, you are offered a glass of water – staying hydrated is encouraged to help with the detoxifying effects of the treatment. We may discuss any findings or areas of focus. I will provide recommendations for your treatment plan and key reflexes that you may work on your hands until I see you at your next appointment. This is all written down with possible changes you may notice after the treatment so you do not have to remember anything. It is recommended to rest after a session, to allow your body to use energy for the healing response.

One of my clients say ‘they float out feeling much lighter’. The feeling will be unique to what your body needs and this will only be found in experiencing a treatment.
